Breaking down where Tiger might play the rest of the year. There are a countless number of keyboard apps on your smartphone that strive to improve the screen-tapping experience.

At the end of the day, however, having a physical keyboard is still the best way to type on any electronic device. Unfortunately, smartphones with a physical keyboard are on the verge of extinction. Luckily, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer called Unihertz has introduced a rugged phone with built-in keyboard that shares many similarities with the classic BlackBerry. The Unihertz Titan is heavily influenced by BlackBerry.

We're sorry for any inconvenience, but the site is currently unavailable.

The display is a square 4. While the BlackBerry smartphones have the business and executive aesthetics, the rugged Titan is clearly designed for the adventurous populations. Unihertz says the smartphone is shockproof and has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. The Titan houses a whopping 6,mAh battery with wireless charging. We currently have no information on the processor, RAM and storage space.

We are also unaware of the exact version of Android on the Titan. The artistic rendering suggested a stock Android experience. The most convincing part of the Titan is the price. It is expected to arrive on Kickstarter like other Unihertz offerings. The company has previously introduced Unihertz Jelly and Unihertz Atom. Both are known to pack great features in a small rugged form factor. Via: Digital Trends. They tend to be large and chunky, with thick bezels, metal plates, and rubberized edgings.

Yes, you read that correctly. What exactly is Unihertz pulling with this bizarre stunt? While I knew the Unihertz Titan was going to be large, nothing prepared me for how enormous it really is. The display is a square 4. The middle key functions as a trackpad and fingerprint scanner, with function keys at either side. Metal panels reinforce the sides of the phone, while a metal plate protects and emphasizes the single camera lens on the rear.

The rest of the phone — except for the keyboard — is covered in thick rubber. There are a lot of extras in here too. But enough about that — what about the headline attraction? While I experienced a couple of laggy moments, performance has, on the whole, been solid and reliable. Oddly for devices that spend a lot of time outdoors, rugged phones tend not to come with great cameras.

The Unihertz Titan is no different in this regard. Pictures tend to come out over-sharpened, even in the best lighting. It also suffers in highly contrasted lighting, and once you hit lower lights, images come out muddy.

The front-facing 8-megapixel selfie lens suffers from many of the same problems. Unihertz has slapped a custom skin over the top of Android, and while it looks extremely similar to stock Android, there are a few giveaways. The lack of an app drawer is a dead giveaway, as is the lack of any gesture navigation.

The entire philosophy behind the phone is strange. It takes the BlackBerry Key2 — an already niche product — and making it more niche by adding a rugged element. Still, there are undoubtedly people this phone appeals to.

The weird thing is, I can see its appeal.

The Unihertz Titan is a cool looking phone, and after playing with it, I can certainly forgive its flaws. Unihertz is estimating a delivery date of December for the device.

That means a square 4.

The keypad also offers physical navkeys as well as a space between them for what looks like a front-mounted fingerprint scanner. The Passport trappings extend to promotional materials too, with Crackberry noting that a now-removed screenshot showed the BlackBerry 10 version of the BlackBerry Hub on the device.

But arguably the best feature might be its battery life, offering a 6,mAh battery that should easily give you two days of juice in theory. That seems pretty cheap for a device with a 6,mAh battery and a physical keypad. Still intrigued?

Xuyuan said the company noticed that people like using smaller smartphones, and while smartwatches are too small and not powerful enough a small smartphone is more ideal. The company first released the Jelly, which was designed as a secondary phone. While some users wanted to use the Jelly as a primary phone, it lacked a sufficient amount of battery, so Unihertz came up with the Atom this past October.

Atom uses stock Android, as the company found people prefer the vanilla operating system compared to a customized user interface.

Additionally, the Atom is IP68 water and dust resistant and can definitely take a drop or two. On the Pixel 2 XL, for example, facial recognition will unlock your screen after which the user is still required to swipe up.

On the Atom, the phone completely unlocks the display, going straight to the home screen. It also has Bluetooth, as well as NFC. The Atom also has a push-to-talk button with an accompanying Zello app — that works via Wi-Fi and mobile data — allowing users to talk walkie-talkie with another across the world.

As might be expected, the small screen makes typing very difficult.

Using the swipe functionality definitely helped a lot, however. The Unihertz Atom was fun to use and I can definitely see people using it as a primary device. For instance, my more physically-active brother tends to prefer small devices that can fit more easily in his pocket, and needs his handsets to be durable.

Personally, I could use the Atom as a secondary device. So while the Jelly, Jelly Pro and the Atom are quite small, the next Unihertz smartphone might be a really big one. Related Articles.
